Easter!

29 04 2011

We had a very nice Easter up in these parts, and I meant to post some photos earlier.  Mary McCarthy was all dressed up in her Easter dress and bonnet.  She enjoyed checking out her Easter basket, and then we headed over to Karen’s for a late afternoon dinner with Karen, Mike, Kate, and Kevin.  Oh, and there was an eagle who joined us in a tree a few feet from Karen’s place.

Enjoy…

As you can see, MMK was not totally against her Easter dress…

Easter basket time, and some intrigue in the eyes of Mary McCarthy…

.

She enjoyed the rattle sound the eggs made (with jelly beans inside) and of course had to test out the plastic…

Ready for some beach time!

And then came the money prize from the basket – pinwheel!

Much like Ralphie, Barkley did NOT want to put on the bunny costume…

Here we are at Karen and Mike’s house for dinner…

If you look in the top right of the window, you can see our eagle friend…

And finally, closer shots of our Easter eagle…

Road Trip!!!

29 04 2011

As you may or may not know, the Kanes will no longer technically be “Alaskanes” starting next week. We are moving back down South – it was just time to do so (and yes, the appearance of a certain Mary McCarthy added to the list of reasons to make our way down!).

First, the blog will continue!  Have no fear, we’ll still be taking tons of photos and will still be writing about our adventures.

Second, the next 3 weeks should be an excellent time for the blog.  We are driving from Bellingham, WA to Mobile, AL – yep, all 2,800 miles. Barkley will be flying down to Shreveport, but Michele, Mary McCarthy, and I will all be in the car taking in a little Americana.

The tentative travel plan is to go from Bellingham to (1) Butte, Montana to (2) Yellowstone to (3) Rapid City, SD to (4) St. Louis, MO to (5) north Alabama to (6) Mobile.  Of course, things may change a little here and there as we go, but our main goals early on are to hit up Yellowstone National Park and Mount Rushmore.

I encourage you to stay tuned to the blog for the first couple weeks of May to see updates from the road.  Also, I have a pretty good feeling that Mary McCarthy will be wearing out Twitter during our travels.

Renewable Energy?

25 04 2011

It turns out that Mary McCarthy is wholly in favor of renewable energy, especially wind energy.  Or maybe she just really liked her pinwheel she got for Easter.

A Look Back

20 04 2011

Everyone tells you how your baby will grow up so fast. We hear it all the time. So one of the great things about this blog is to be able to capture all that growth, see how Mary McCarthy has changed over the months (and she has!). It’s pretty amazing to us to look back at photos from October or November and compare them to today. While the adults in the photos don’t look all that different over that 6 month span, MMK has certainly gotten bigger!

Anyway, enjoy this quick look back over the last 6 months.

Northwest Alaska

14 04 2011

Our friend Karen is on another work trip up in some of the rural areas of the state along the western edge. This time, she went to Bethel and Hooper Bay. (Kate’s dad lives in Bethel.)

Michele and I have not made it out that far west – as King Salmon is the closest we got. Anyway, she shared some more great photos and siad I could link them on the blog.

If you want to see some places with very little running water, beautiful landscapes, and $14 Raisin Bran, then you should check them out!
