A Saturday Outdoors

31 01 2011

The sun came back to visit Juneau this past Friday and Saturday.  We figured it was time to take Mary McCarthy out for a little sledding and to see her first iceberg up close.  As you can see, it was a beautiful day out…

First things first – sledding.  For this adventure, Michele took charge of Barkley, and I carried Mary McCarthy in Baby Bjorn.  She was bundled up nice and tight, and I think even slept for most of our walk.  Here we are on the sled…

And here we are at the end of our 25-foot downhill ride.  Ha, not really.  I think we went about 10 inches max…

There were tons of great icebergs out in the frozen lake this time around.  We decided just to walk to the ones closest, but Michele got some photos of some of the cooler ones off in the distance…

Here we are walking on the lake toward the iceberg…

Now up close…

Barkley seemed to enjoy roaming around on the ice and jumping on the icebergs.  Michele grabbed him for this photo…

We took MMK out of the carrier for a just a few seconds to get this picture.  We had to prove she was actually there!

These are a few more photos of some other icebergs and from our walk back to the car…

After our visit to the glacier, we decided to drive out the road a little ways to catch the 4:12 pm sunset.  This is Auke Bay harbor…

The beginning of the sunset was nice, but the ending was rather spectacular.  There was a deep, pink color across the horizon, which we tried to photograph as best we could…

Random End Of Week Pics

27 01 2011

I just have a few photos to put up that don’t have a ton of relation to each other.  The first four are from our outing last weekend to Cope Park.  This was our first real try with the Baby Bjorn.  And I have to say we were impressed.  Michele has made good use of it a few times since.

Here I am trying out the contraption before we ended up out in the elements…

After we felt safe with our Baby Bjorn skills, we got Mary McCarthy suited up in her rain coat.  This is a pretty solid little jacket if you ask me…

And here we are out in a little bit of rain.  As they say in Juneau, if you don’t get out in the rain, you’ll never get out.  We’re teaching this to MMK early.   She appeared to handle it like a champ – for about 15 minutes…

Since I was toting around the baby, Michele took on the job of throwing the tennis ball for Barkley. which was pretty tough because the ground was pretty slick.  I had the camera ready, but Michele stayed upright the entire time.  Here they are on the field at Cope Park…

Mary McCarthy liked this photo so much that she posted it on her Twitter account.  Nothing to see here, just checking out Barkley…

And these last four photos are from a week ago when we got some excellent snow over a two-day stretch.  The first two are out on front of our place, and the last two are from the road to the glacier…

Morning Photos

27 01 2011

I promise I’ll put a few of Mary McCarthy up a little later, but I took some really cool photos of the moon still out this morning.  As I walked out the door on my way to work, I could see the half moon was out pretty clear just over the mountains.  And it seemed light enough to get a decent shot.  I must say, I was very impressed with the effort from our camera on this one.  I was able to snag some really nice close-ups.

Introducing…

24 01 2011

The tallest 14-week old baby in Juneau!!!  Her legs are just so disproportionately long…

Photos At Night

19 01 2011

Again, I must open with thanks to our pal Dave for explaining the “ISO Sensitivity” option on our camera.  Now, we can actually get some decent photo of NATURE at night.  We had a great view of the full moon last night, and it was clear enough that the snow on the mountains was glowing a bit from the brightness.  Of course, I decided to throw on my coat and run out for a few pics.  And some side props to Barkley, as I would not have ventured out in the first place had he not needed to take care of his business.

Here are a few of the moon first…

This is a view of Douglas from the front of our place.  I think Karen and Mike’s house is probably in this shot somewhere…

And here is one zoomed out a bit where you can see Mount Jumbo in the background.  I actually did a little bit of hiking on that mountain in the summer with Eric and Lisa.  With the full moon, you can really see how the snow basically glows in the dark…

The only thing missing from the glow in the dark snow are images of wolves howling at the moon…

The Donna Gallery

18 01 2011

With the exception of one photo in this post, I believe my mom was behind the camera (she’s in one of them, so I’m pretty sure Michele took it).  The first few are some select photos of Mary McCarthy, and then the rest are some snow and icicle shots from around downtown.

Here’s MMK in her Little Lamb seat.  I am a big fan of her purple-people-eater outfit with the matching elephant booties…

And here she is in her brand new swing…

Then a quick trip out into the snow with my mom…

And here she is with me on Sunday morning giving her “Whatcha talking ’bout, Willis” face…

And finally on the baby front, here’s Michele with Mary McCarthy at lunch yesterday, as she’s sporting her pink hoodie…

Now for the scenic photos from around town.  I thought these all turned our quite nicely, and am particularly fond of the second one below…

Shrine of Saint Therese

11 01 2011

After enjoying a brisk walk around Eagle Beach, we stopped by the Shrine of Saint Therese.  Michele stayed in the car with Mary McCarthy for this stop, but my mom and I walked around for a few minutes. I think she is doing a little bit of acting here, but you can see my mom showing how cold it is…

It was quite windy at The Shrine, but that provided some pretty cool shots of the waves crashing against the rocks…

.

Here are a few photos of the some of the religious symbols around the church…

.

This is the inside of the church.  We really like the Mass out here, but it’s only offered in the summer…

.

And finally, I will post the photos that I was urged to take by the ladies in the car.  I did not want to get back out and take them, but after seeing the end result, I guess they were right about the berry trees making for a good photo…
