A Blue (Jean Jacket) Christmas

28 12 2010

A few days before Christmas, I went to Wal-Mart here to grab a few things Mary McCarthy needed (formula, diapers) and decided to also do a little extra “dad” Christmas shopping for her as well.  As I was walking through the baby section toward the necessities, something caught my eye on the sale rack.  I knew Mary McCarthy just had to have it!

So, even if she never wears her first ever tiny jean jacket, she and I will always have these photos to memorialize how excited she was to receive it.

At first, she is not sure what to think.  Mom’s opening a box, but what could it be?

Then Mom pulls the gift from the box, and her attention is on it 100%…

Michele lifts the jacket to show the camera, and Mary McCarthy’s eyes follow its glorious blue color…

Here, I imagine she’s thinking, “Wow, that is one sharp denim jacket.  Now I’m 1/3 of the way to my baby-Canadian-tuxedo!”

My guess is, she was as excited about that jean jacket from her dad as she was in this photo below watching college football…

In the end, the look on the face of Michele and the face of MMK was well worth the three bucks!

Christmas With The Kanes

28 12 2010

This one is going to be a two-parter.  We had a few different things going on with Christmas to report.  First, we attempted to turn our baby into Lady Gaga, as she managed to fit in six different Christmas outfits.  Of course, I think Lady Gaga changes by choice and not because she spit up a little. Second, we got some great snow up here on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day and took full advantage of it for pictures.

We had two gatherings to attend on Dec. 24, starting with Stew and Mindy’s annual party.  Here’s Mary McCarthy all dressed up in outfit number 1…

.

After a nice time at Stew and Mindy’s, we headed over to Kate and Kevin’s for a traditional enchilada holiday dinner.  Dave and Jeanette were also in attendance.  Here’s Dave getting his turn to hold the baby…

You can’t really tell, but she is in her “Santa baby” pajamas in the above photo.  After a decent night’s sleep, it was time for Christmas morning.  Here’s Mary McCarthy giving me a look that says, “You mean I get presents???”  Seriously, that’s exactly what that look means.

When you make a video for the song “I Want A Hippopotamus For Christmas,” guess what you get?

After opening some presents and having breakfast, we decided to commemorate Mary McCarthy’s first Christmas being a white Christmas.  She actually seemed to enjoy her few minutes in the snow…

Pink is most definitely her color!  In just a bit I’ll post some photos of her favorite gift (at least in my opinion).

It’s About Time!

It took him a while, but Barkley has finally figured out what we got him for Christmas this year…

A Little More Nature

23 12 2010

First off, the good news: I will spare you of a long lead-in to the amateur lunar eclipse photos I took  that draws lyrics from Bonnie Tyler’s “Total Eclipse of the Heart”   I will not mention anything about this song being wonderfully covered by The Dan Band in “Old School.”  I will not mention that I once sang with song at karaoke night with my law school roommate Brad.  I will not bring up the line about “now there’s only love in the dark” since it was a lunar eclipse.  I most certainly will not mention any of Bonnie Tyler’s other hits, such as “Holding Out For A Hero” or “Holding Out For A Hero (club mix).”

Anyway, on to the photos.  I walked outside around 9:30pm our time to see what was happening.  I couldn’t find the moon, but then a neighbor also outside to see the eclipse made a melodic suggestion to me… Turn around.  Bam, there it was.

These photos are not the greatest, but after I spent 45 minutes trying to figure out the appropriate setting on the camera to try to capture the eclipe, I ‘m sure as heck putting them on the blog!

No, the eclipse had not exactly started at the time of these first two, but I thought they turned out okay…

It started…

It kept going…

Then I got frustrated that the photos were not coming out as awesomely as I had hoped, and it was started to cloud up a bit, and the temperature was 11 degrees.   So I went back inside.

But I do have one more set of photos.  Last week I got up before the crack of dawn (which in Juneau in December means setting your alarm for 8:00 am and hitting the snooze button only once) in order to catch the 8:42 am sunrise before heading into work.  I was not disappointed…

Cope Park In Winter

22 12 2010

It has been ridiculously cold here the last few weeks. We have been in the teens for about 5 straight days, and it’s even been a little windy. Nonetheless, Barkley needs his activity. He does not seem to comprehend how cold it is (as is seen when it takes him 10 minutes to find the perfect poop spot at 11pm).

It has been sunny during the day, for the small amount of time the sun is out.  And actually, today is our shortest amount of daylight of the year.  The sun came up at 8:46 am and will be going down shortly, at 3:07 pm.  Then you can throw in the mountains and you lose about another 30 minutes of sun time.   Anyway, I took Barkley to Cope Park at lunch time for a walk – certainly one of his favorite places.

I did come across something I thought was quite interesting.  We have seen frozen waterfalls before, but this is the first time I have seen water frozen that was dripping from a pipe.  This first photo is the only one I could locate from the summer that had the pipe in it.  You can see the pipe on the right side…

And here’s the same view from today with the water frozen…

And some closer looks…

.

And here’s a shot of Gold Creek.  You can see the chunks of ice floating along or sitting on rocks…

This last photo is one I took out the road last week that I thought turned out pretty well….

If I remember to grab the memory card tomorrow, I will put up some photos of the sunrise from last Friday and a couple I attempted of the lunar eclipse.

Just One Request From Santa

We had a little fun this past weekend with ole Mary McCarthy.  And she was a good sport.  Enjoy…

Move Over Cam Newton

This girl has a Heisman pose that rivals Desmond Howard, and an old-school looking knit helmet that would make Doc Blanchard or Glenn Davis proud…
