A Few More From Friday

28 04 2010

On our drive home from Lena Beach on Friday night, we were given an awesome photo opportunity.  It was still somewhat bright out, and the wind was very calm along Auke Lake.  We drove past the lake, turned around, parked, then hopped out and took these photos…

A Day At Lena Beach

27 04 2010

The sun has finally returned!  And the legislative session has finally ended!  What does that mean?  I took Friday off, Michele already had it off, and Barkley re-arranged his scheduled – so we could all take a trip out the road.  Our pal Kelly got the ball rolling by sending out an email suggesting we all get together for a cookout.  Few clouds in the sky and a temp in the 60s, it was not tough to get some people on board with that plan.

Michele and I had some lunch, then grabbed Tom and headed out the road.  Unfortunately, Eagle Beach (our usual spot) was so windy it felt like about 20 degrees out there.  So we moved back close to town at Lena Beach, which was covered from the major wind gusts.  We got there around 3:30 or so, then were joined as the day went on by Kelly, Kate, Kevin, Dave, Jeanette, Leslie, Leif, and Eric (and Eric’s new puppy Ali).

Here was the scenery we were forced to take in all afternoon…

Here’s Tom and me on the beach, a beach that disappeared about 30 minutes after we got there…

Here I am throwing the tennis ball for Barkley.  Excellent action shot of the little guy.  I think Michele and I are in agreement that the “Chunk-It” is one of the better pet inventions out there…

Why is it great to not actually have to touch the tennis ball?  Exhibit A…

This is Eric’s new puppy Ali…

I have a little portable propane grill that I brought with us.  Not a bad set-up…

And one of the stars of the show, the Bud Light cooler/boombox…

There was a lot of sausage grilled, and even some asparagus (yes, we really are that classy).  Here’s a photo from dinner time…

I really like this photo below of Dave, Eric, and Kevin down by the water.  I’m not sure which of the Higgins’ dogs that is.  Kevin is either throwing a stick or saying, “Hey guys, look over there.”

Here are a few of the ladies – Kelly, Kate, and Michele – enjoying a laugh…

Barkley got his tail braided by Kevin…

And here’s Michele and me.  As the sun starts to go down, you definitely have to bundle up!

Look, the sun really is going down…

Getting closer to the end of our big trip out to Lena…

And now it’s time to start cleaning up…

Certainly a fun day off.  I have a few more very cool photos from our ride home, but I will save those for later.  On Saturday, Michele and I went to our end of the year bowling party, but we didn’t take any pictures there.

Dang QVC!

18 04 2010

Michele recently noticed a suspicious charge on our credit card and asked if I knew anything about it.  The charge was $49.99 to QVC for a memory foam pillow.  I don’t know that I have ever bought anything off QVC before, and Michele said she didn’t even know what channel that was.  It remained a mystery for days.  Then we saw this…

Aurora Borealis Did What Butler Could Not

12 04 2010

Many of you may have read how America “deserved” to have Butler win the national championship game.  America needed it!  Well, Juneau needed an aurora borealis showing before the night was shortened to a few hours.  And guess what – the Northern Lights came through!  Unlike Butler.

It was quite a combination of factors that led to a late night viewing of the Northern Lights.  First, Michele went to a dinner party on Saturday night (I was working) and for some reason decided to bring the camera along.  While there, our photog pal Dave set our camera to a setting that would capture the aurora.  Fast forward to Sunday – again, I had to work until about 9pm and Michele took in some of the acts of Folk Fest.  On our walk home, Michele got a text message from our friend Mike, informing us that the Northern Lights were out.

Now, seeing as we had a camera that was set for the photos at night and a clear sky with no moon, we decided to drive out to North Douglas and see what we could find.  Believe me, they did not disappoint.  Nor did our camera.

The photos we got are below.  Michele was the point-lady on these, and a special thanks to Dave and Mike for their contributions.  Enjoy…
