The Dark Side of Sports in Alaska

9 09 2008

It’s Tuesday, and Michele and I are still both a little worn out from the weekend.  Not so much for any type of grueling activity – but because of our time zone!

Most folks view the weekend as a chance to relax, sleep in, take it easy. Once football season starts, that all goes out the window for us. Friday, we went to dinner with some friends and took in “Tropic Thunder” (hilarious, by the way). Then it was home and into bed at a reasonable hour. Why? Because we had to be up by 8:30 the next morning to watch Dave, Dave, and Dave call the Auburn-Southern Miss game.

So after a morning of jumping from game to game (we get the ESPN Gameplan package so we can watch all the SEC action), we hope to sit back and enjoy the Alabama game. Of course, there are no off weeks when cheering for the Tide. I think we were even more worn out after watching them slop through that 20-6 affair.

Then comes Sunday – the day to sleep in for many.  But guess what time the NFL games start?  9 a.m. – ridiculous! Now we have to start our Sunday just as early, especially since it’s the first week of the pro season. Normally, Sunday is a little more laid back, but what can I say – I get really excited for football.  (Michele gets excited for Alabama football, while I want to watch every game out there.)

Then it’s back to work on Monday.  Though, I did take this Monday off to watch the US Open final, but I think you get the point. We just hope the Tide never plays in the Cotton Bowl again – that game kicked off at 7:00 a.m. our time on New Year’s Day!

However, we did take some on Saturday to take a short walk out behind the house, even checking out an eagle from pretty close range sitting on a marker out in the water. And went over to our friends’ place for dinner on Sunday.

And we woke up to good news this morning… our ducks are back! Yes!!!

This photo was taken in the summer of 2008 around 10:30 at night just past the North Douglas boat launch. And yes, that’s Brian fishing.
